BIO

MOSAICS
Kate Kerrigan, originally from Wisconsin, has been a San Francisco Bay Area resident since 1994. She has been a mosaicist for ten years, over which time her work has evolved dramatically in both material and technique. In 2006 and 2008, she studied with mosaic masters in Italy, both in Ravenna and Venice. Having embraced the history of this ancient art form, her work has shifted to this classic tradition, employing traditional tools (hammer and hardie), materials (stone and smalti) and techniques. Her contemporary compositions, which are drawn from her photography, translate beautifully into this ancient art form. Kerrigan actively produces, shows and sells her work in the San Francisco Bay Area and has been recognized on both national and international levels.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Having not gone digital (yet), Kate relies on her old manual Minolta and still uses 35mm film. She constantly looks at her surroundings in terms of frames and composition and really sees beauty in the details of everyday life. Inspired by her travels throughout the world, she tends to capture moments in time, shooting mostly in black and white and focusing primarily on urban landscapes. "Within the composition, I look for shadows, reflections and silhouettes. My eye is naturally drawn to symmetry and repetition. I prefer to shoot in rather gloomy conditions, using black and white, to give it a sense of timelessness. Hopefully all of this sets the tone, draws one in and tells a story."
